Thirty-nine men on a dead
man's chest, plus one purloining parrot, make Forty Thieves.
One of the most popular
attractions of the Disneylands in America, Japan, and France is the "Pirates
of the Caribbean" ride. From Treasure Island to the spectacular
Steven Spielberg movie Hook, pirates continue to fascinate young and
old alike.
One artist who understands the
allure of the high seas is the award-winning, adventurous Don Maitz, the
newest artist in the Greenwich Workshop family. Best known for his
stunning science-fiction paintings and his swashbuckling portraits of that
old reprobate, Captain Morgan, in billboard and magazine advertisements all
over the country, Maitz now presents this rollicking scene of a buccaneer
boarding party, combining scrupulous research with a sense of fierce fun and
raucous romance.
The wealth of detail is a feast
for the eyes, complete with a stolen figurehead in bondage; a reluctant,
nervous fiddler; rusty cutlasses, tattooed flesh, and gap-toothed leers; and
an angry Captain about to give what-for to a sea dog who shouldn't be
drinking.
And that's not all. For
every one of the thirty-nine blood-thirsty freebooters on board, there's a
story waiting to be told. Forty Thieves is a tall tale of
adventure, rich with action, full of reaction, and brimming over with
interaction. It's a perfect poster for the adventurer in all of us and
to celebrate your own crazy crew of characters.
